CMS Issues New Documentation Retention Requirements CMS has issued a new requirement for providers, physicians and suppliers to maintain documentation for seven years from the date of service and to provide access to that documentation if requested. The documentation to be maintained includes written and electronic documents (including the National Provider Identifier of the physician who ordered/certified the home health services) relating to written orders and certifications. If within 30 days a provider fails to respond to a letter request for these documents from the Medicare contractor, the contractor may revoke the provider's Medicare billing privileges and impose a one-year re-enrollment ban.
