Each year, diagnostic coding accuracy plays a greater role in quality reporting, risk adjustment and payment. A good foundation for ICD-10 coding accuracy is learning the fundamentals of translating medical terminology into coding language. The Art of ICD-10-CM Coding: Basic Concepts for Beginning Coders is a one-day, highly interactive workshop for novice coders who have not had formal coding training. National coding expert Sparkle Sparks, PT, MPT, COS-C, will discuss the essential basics for the most accurate application of diagnosis codes.

Workshop topics:

  • Translate medical terminology into coding language
  • Understand coding terminology, conventions and general coding guidelines
  • Simple steps for finding a diagnosis code
  • Selection of diagnoses and codes for relevant OASIS items
  • Selection and sequencing criteria for primary and secondary diagnoses

Please note: a current ICD-10-CM Coding Manual is required for class participation. Also, all participants are required to read pages 8-18 of the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting for 2018 (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/icd/10cmguidelines_fy2018_final.pdf) prior to the workshop.

Upon completion of the workshop, attendees will receive 6.5 nursing CEs and 6.5 continuing education units from the Board of Medical Specialty Coding and Compliance.
